HERNDON • Sandra M. “Sandy” Troutman, 78, of Herndon, Jordan Twp., passed away Feb. 27, 2020, at the Premier at Susquehanna, Millersburg. She was born in Harrisburg Sept. 5, 1941, a daughter of the late Marie and Nevin Troutman. Sandy Troutman lived a colorful life steeped in the love, study and sharing of music. She graduated with the class of 1959 from Mahanoy Joint High School (a precursor to Line Mountain), where she participated in district band and orchestra. She loved her fellow high school alumni and enjoyed attending reunions. She served as treasurer of her reunion committee until January 2020. Sandy attended Susquehanna University from 1959-1963, earning a bachelor’s degree in music education. She went on to earn a master’s equivalency in music education at West Chester University in the late 1960s. She taught music at the Bangor, Pa., school district in Northampton County in the 1960s. She also served as Line Mountain School District choral director and assistant band director. Sandy’s love of music was matched only by her faith. Sandy served as choir director and/or church organist for St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Klingerstown, Himmel’s Church Choir, Rebuck, St. Paul’s UCC Church, Selinsgrove, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Red Cross, Northumberland Christ Methodist Church, and David’s UCC Church in Hebe. Sandy maintained her interest in sharing the gift of music by teaching at her private music practice from the mid-1980s to January 2020 when she continued to teach six piano students. In her music studio hung a poster that read, “Long after the toys of childhood are gone, the joy of music remains.” She believed in this sentiment and enjoyed sharing her passion for a pursuit that continues to enrich the lives of many of her hundreds of students. In addition to music, Sandy also enjoyed traveling. She visited nearly all 50 states, including trips to Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and through several European nations. She supported her community in a variety of ways, most notably by creating the Marshall Troutman Memorial Scholarship Fund and volunteering as Jordan Twp. auditor. She treasured her grandchildren, cats, crossword puzzles, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, attending church services, and was absolutely ruthless at cards and board games, particularly Scrabble and Rook. Sandy is survived by Clair V. Troutman, her spouse of 49 years and eight months, two daughters, Staci L. Raker and Heidi D. Kimmel, sons-in-law Christopher Raker and Harry A. Kimmel III, two grandchildren, Melia A. Raker and Harry A. Kimmel IV, and sisters Sharon Lessig of Reading and Sheila Romberger of Pillow. She was preceded in death by her son Marshall C. Troutman in 1991. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Grace United Methodist Church, Millersburg. In lieu of flowers, Sandy asked anyone wishing to honor her memory consider donating to the American Lung Association (lung.org), American Red Cross (redcross.org) or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America (donate.lls .org). James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, is in charge of the arrangements. To sign the online guest book, or to post a picture of Sandra, visit reedfh.com
