NORFOLK, Va. • Richard Steven Umholtz, 69, died July 21 in Norfolk, Va. He was born May 14, 1950, in Berrysburg, a son of the late Leo and Ruth Deibert Umholtz. He was a graduate of Upper Dauphin Area High School and completed his studies at Electronics Institute of Harrisonburg, Pa. He began his career as a structural designer but concentrated on marine and naval design after moving to the Tidewater region of Virginia. He was honorably discharged from the Air National Guard after serving for six years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Umholtz. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Vivian Hampton Umholtz; and a daughter, Jessica Lee Umholtz; a sister, Diane Shreffler; a niece and several nephews; and several grandnephews and grandnieces.
