HALIFAX • Mary K. Caponigro, age 66, passed away suddenly Dec. 19, 2020, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born Oct. 18, 1954, in Scranton, Pa., the daughter of Ana (Casarella) Ferguson and the late James Ferguson. Mary was married to Brian Caponigro, her high school sweetheart, for 44 years. She graduated from West Scranton High School in 1972, graduated from Marywood College in 1976, and earned her master’s degree in early childhood education from Wilkes University. She began her teaching career in Scranton. She also taught in the Catholic School District in Baltimore, Md., and retired as an elementary teacher in 2013 from Halifax Area School District in Halifax, Pa., with 25 years of service. Mary was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Millersburg, Pa. She was the proud author of a children’s shape poetry book and enjoyed sewing, baking, and spending time with her family; however, what she loved most was being a grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Brian Caponigro of Halifax; and three children: Krista (Caponigro) Harner and husband Ryan of Halifax, Nina (Caponigro) Long and husband Joe of Annville, and Ross Caponigro and wife Ashleigh of Camp Hill. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Bennett, Ethan, Jacob, Hudson, and Ridley. Additionally, she is survived by her mother, Ana (Casarella) Ferguson of Scranton, and her two sisters, Angela Cummings of Schnecksville and Bonita Ferguson of Scranton. A visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, 9–11 a.m., at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church located at 607 Stoney Creek Dr. in Dauphin, Pa. Following visitation, a mass of Catholic burial will be held. The family requests that memorial donations may be made in Mary’s name to the Elizabethville Area Library or to the Lykens Valley Children’s Museum. Hoover-Boyer Funeral Home Ltd., Millersburg/Elizabethville, is handling arrangements. To sign the online guest book, go to min nichfuneral.com Paid by funeral home
