Joy Louise Schaeffer

GREENCASTLE • Joy Louise Schaeffer, age 75, of Greencastle, Pa., passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, after a brief illness at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, Md. Born in Millersburg, Pa., March 7, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Ethel May Shepley Murray. A 1961 graduate of Millersburg Area High School, she was active in the band and played basketball. She attended the Thompson Business School in Harrisburg, Pa., where she learned her administration assistant skills. Joy was an active member of the Greencastle American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed her bingo nights with all her bingo friends, boating on Raystown Lake, following her children and grandchildren around to all their sporting events, riding her scooter, traveling and just being with her sisters and her family. Joy retired from Ravenwood Assisted Living Center in Hagerstown, Md., in 2005, where she was the administrative assistant. Surviving is her high school sweetheart, William A. Schaeffer, whom she married June 29, 1963; three children: Joseph M. Schaeffer (wife Dena), Jason M. Schaeffer (wife Angie), and Jenna M. Mowen (husband Dirk), all of Greencastle, Pa.; seven grandchildren: Dylan Schaeffer, Carly Lesznar, Devin Schaeffer, Abigail Mowen, Ashlynn Schaeffer, Caleb Schaeffer and Baylee Schaeffer; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gayle Geist of Beavertown, Pa., and Carol Strohecker of Harrisburg, Pa. She also is survived by her nieces and nephews, who she adored. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jack L. Murray. A memorial service was held Feb. 25, 2019, at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. Interment followed the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
