Evelyn M. Ulsh
MILLERSBURG • Evelyn M. Ulsh, formerly of Millersburg Pa., passed from this earth Thursday, July 16, 2020 at The Carlisle Assisted Living Community in Naples, Fla., at the age of 104 years, 7 months and 10 days.
She was born Dec. 6, 1915 in Millersburg. She was the daughter of Harry and Mary Phillips.
She married John D. Ulsh in Elkton, Md., July 6, 1934. They both promptly returned home to live with their respective parents. Notwithstanding that awkward living arrangement their daughter, Sylvia, was born 10 months later. And, 11 years thereafter their second child, James, was born. They lived and raised their children in Millersburg.
In 1971, they ventured to southwest Florida and began to spend the winter months together in Naples until John’s death Dec. 22, 1988.
Evelyn was a graduate of Millersburg High School and the Central Pennsylvania Business School. Her sole but worthy occupation was wife, mother and homemaker.
As a widow, she lived an independent and determined life for 32 years. Her home in Naples became a respite for her family and friends all of whom were welcome at any and all times and treated like royalty.
She reluctantly took up the game of golf in her 60s and just as reluctantly gave up the game at 96. She was a very competent and competitive bridge player until the end.
A few years ago she also reluctantly agreed to allow her grandchildren to Google® a few answers to the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle so they could get to dinner on time. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Naples, Fla.
Her daughter Sylvia U. Adams and her son-in-law, Samuel W. Adams predeceased her.
She is survived by her son, James A. Ulsh and her daughter-in-law, Becky Z. Ulsh, of Millersburg, Pa.; her grandson, John P. Adams and his wife, Kathleen K. Adams, of Hudson, Mass.; her granddaughter, Catherine A. Tracy and her husband, James N. Tracy, of Wall, N.J.; her grandson, John D. Ulsh and his wife, Tonia L. Ulsh, of Carlisle, Pa.; her grandson, Andrew K. Ulsh and his wife, Bingham G. Ulsh, of Atlanta, Ga., and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was a woman like no other and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
A private graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg.
Donations in her memory may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Naples Fla., or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Millersburg, Pa.
