MILLERSBURG • Donald D. “Pup” Cooper, 92 passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 19 under the care of Hospice of Central PA. He was born Oct. 1, 1928, in Williamstown, Pa., to the late Odell and Sara Cooper. He was one of six children and is survived by his younger sister Elaine Machamer of Harrisburg, Pa. He was a graduate of Williamstown High School where he played football. Upon graduation he joined and became a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps serving from 1948-1951 and rising to the rank of corporal. While serving in the Korean War, he was awarded two Purple Hearts. In 1951, he met and married his loving wife Miriam Cooper of Halifax after a whirlwind romance that lasted 69 years. He is survived by Miriam. He is also survived by his sons and their families, Jack and Deborah Cooper of Middletown, Pa., and their children Donray, Cheryl and Shawn, Kevin and Pam Cooper of Orefield, Pa., and their son Garrett, Scott A. Cooper of Millersburg, Pa., and Brian and Susan Cooper of Harrisburg, Pa., and their sons Brian and Patrick. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Grayson. He was employed as a service manager by Peirce-Phelps Inc. of Camp Hill, Pa. His job included repairing air conditioning, appliances and televisions as well as training staff and dealers on new items. He also owned his own sales and repair service locally. His reputation as a repairman came in handy at a Halifax vs. Line Mountain football game when the lights went out and he was paged to repair the lights so the game could continue. Raising his family in Halifax, Pa., he was a member of the Halifax United Methodist Church, Halifax Borough Council, an active member of the school district’s PTO and booster club. As a member of the booster club, he was one of several members instrumental in building the first concession stand at the Halifax High School football field. He enjoyed hosting the weekly huddle club for the football team in his shop/game room each week. Don was an avid golfer and could be found often on the links at Lykens Valley Golf Course. He was one of the original founders of the Silver Stragglers. His grandson Garrett challenged him to learn to rollerblade in his late 60s and he continued to enjoy it well into his 70s. He enjoyed playing racquetball with his friend Bubbles. He and his wife spent 15 winter seasons in Sebring, Fla., escaping the cold winters and making many new friends. He enjoyed building wooden replicas of cars, trucks, trains, golf carts and other items in his woodshop at his home in Millersburg. Graveside services with military honors will be held Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, 11 –11:30 a.m., at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Indiantown Gap Road, Annville PA 17003.
