SARASOTA, Fla. • Carleton Norwood Rowe, loving husband, father of three, and stepfather of one, passed away Feb. 27, 2021, at the age of 92. Carl was born April 1, 1928, in Waynesville, Pa., to Cleon and Kathryn Mae (Jury) Rowe and grew up on a Halifax-area farm. He was a corporal/technician fourth grade in the U.S. Army and served as chief jailor of Sugamo Prison during the Japanese war trials. A graduate of Juniata College, he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Penn State in 1955. After five years with Texaco, the rest of his notable career was spent as a tribologist with Mobil Oil. Along with many patents and awards, he was also a past president of The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). On June 28, 1956, he married Marian Brightbill, and together they raised a daughter, Barbara, and two sons, David and Steven. On July 28, 1990, he remarried to Margaret Turner Dute, who had a daughter, Marjorie. Carl enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, serving as a church officer and volunteering at Northminster Presbyterian Church, and watching Penn State athletics. He was known for his intellect, work ethic and his love for his family. Carl was preceded in death by his father, Cleon; his mother, Kathryn; his brother, Richard; his sister, Joyce; and his stepdaughter, Marjorie. He is survived by his wife, Margie; his three children and six grandchildren. A service for the family will be held on a later date at the Sarasota National Cemetery. Paid by funeral home
