After successful spring, Sentinel
shifts focus to summer sports

The Upper Dauphin Area softball and Williams Valley baseball teams just wouldn't let the spring sports season end.

For the second straight season, both schools had teams playing up until the final week possible in the PIAA Championships.

The Trojans pushed their season to their brink with their second straight appearance in the Class-A finals, and in the process became the first area team to ever play for a state championship in two consecutive seasons.

The Vikings' baseball team followed the softball team's footsteps from the 2007 season and made it further than any previous team by going as far as the PIAA Class-A Eastern Final.

Including the two aforementioned teams, eight of a possible 12 baseball and softball squads qualified for their respective district tournaments.

The Millersburg track and field team had another successful season, including the boys' second straight Tri-Valley League title and the girls' team claiming a share of the title.

In addition to the success in the TVL, the Indians had five athletes finish in the top three at the District 3-AA meet and qualify for the PIAA meet.

At this time, though, the staff at the Sentinel would  like to encourage readers to submit results and requests for coverage for anything sports-related.

As always, we can only cover what our resources allow and we will make an effort to print any sports results, within reason, that are submitted.

Next week's edition – the July 1 issue – of Sentinel sports will feature the All-Sentinel baseball team. The All-Sentinel softball will follow in the July 8 issue.

Shameless self-promotion. If anybody has wondered what former Sentinel sports editor Chris Albright is

up to these days, feel free check out his Philadelphia sports devoted blog at www.whizwitout.com.

For anybody who's wondering where the name of the site came from, it's from our consensus pick of the best style of the Philly cheesesteak – the "whiz ".

For the novices, that's a steak, with Cheese Whiz¨, without onions.

I've made a few contributions, but Albright handles the majority of the writing and has been doing an awesome job of covering the Philly sports beat.

Stop by and join in the discussion or leave a comment to let him know he's doing a great job.
